Millions of Americans born after WWII, of both genders, have never seen a foreskin in the flesh. In many parts of the USA, the vast majority of American boys born in a maternity ward, to parents who were part of the provincial mainstream, were circumcised in hospital 1-2 days after birth. Boys were typically circumcised before Mum first changed their nappies. Many maternity wards circumcised EVERY boy without asking permission. My mother cannot recall having discussed with anyone my younger brother’s circ. (I was spared the knife because I was born in Ireland.)

The American boys among whom I came ago never joked about circumcision before their uni days. The laddish teens among which I came of age NEVER mentioned or joked about having been surgically altered shortly after birth. I suspect they literally did not know. I learned very early to pee with my foreskin pulled back, and ditto when showering in a sports club. The only boy to see my foreskin thought I was deformed. The typical Caucasian middle class girl born in the in the 1950s 60s and 70s, would never see a foreskin lifelong, unless she took on a foreign, black, or Latino lover sometime in her youth, and made love with the light on. Or included sex with her European holidays.

This made things quite awkward for an uncut
American boy like me. A foreskin is not obvious during intercourse in the dark. But it can’t hide during handjobs (which good American girls often did
not do well) and blowjobs (an American obsession), and especially, during daylight. I read a post by an American woman describing one of her university lovers. After several months of groping in the dark, including the back seat of cars, an opportunity arose to spend time in her bedroom while her parents were on holiday. Her boyfriend pale and trembling, sat her down, saying “We gotta talk. I’m not circumcised.” She
was gobsmacked, and also admitted that she did not really know what the word meant (sex education for girls tends to go light on this tender subject).
He then opened trou and gave her a demonstration. Her jaw dropped to the floor, though she did not find what she saw off-putting.

The woman said that this happened 13 years ago and that she was now pregnant with her first child, and that she had been told it would be a boy.
Her memory of seeing a foreskin had surged to the fore, and that she had decided not to let Bubs undergo the chop. But many American women find it
very unsettling to have to look at and clean the foreskin every time they change Bub’s nappy, every time they give him a bath. They fear the stirring
up of their randy curiosity. Best not to go down the track, and cut it off once
and for all.

Still, nowadays about 40-45% of USA baby boys leave the maternity clinic looking the way Mother Nature intended. Even now, American teenage and varsity age girls not infrequently have encountered both flavours of men while sewing their wild oats. Some women so fortunate find the foreskin gross. Others find it delightful, including the menopausal American novelist
Jane Smiley in her novel Horse Heaven, which contains a hymn of lascivious
praise to the delights of being penetrated by an intact cock. I predict that quite a few American women will, sooner or later, develop a foreskin fetish. American gay men are already there.
